HGU-85/P Flight Helmet - Mid 1990's
This US Navy / Marine Corps flight helmet was designed as an NVG platform for night operations. This helmet was issued primarily to F-18 pilots prior to the introduction of the HGU-68/P which replaced it. Most 85/Ps were flown with the oxygen mask (MBU-5/P & 12/P) [obviously all 85/Ps in tactical aircraft were flown with oxygen masks]. Oxygen to the brain enhances night vision and therefore is integral to NightOps.   During the day, the pilot would simply attach a dark 55/P style visor via the snap/bungee attachment.
